Creating Efficient Implementations from Express Information Models

The use of specification as an integral part of design and implementation is accepted as part of most design methodologies. However, specification techniques differ in the degree of formalism they offer. For example, VDM [7] and Z [8] are both mathematically based formal specification languages, but IDEF1X [3, 10] is a semi-formal graphical method. The goal of using specification may also differ. In some cases, the expectation is that the specification will be used by people to enhance their understanding of a given domain without necessarily leading to implementation. In other cases, the specification is seen as a definition of the domain for use explicitly as the basis for implementations. Such implementations are commonly created manually, following the specification. The implementations may also be checked by validation tools based on the same specification.
